During Pride Month LGBT communities come together to celebrate, show solidarity, and empower one another.
It overflows at Mighty Hoopla, a pop festival for everyone, no matter what your sexual orientation, gender, body shape, age or cultural heritage is…a festival that has become a staple in the calendar for many LGBT+ individuals who descend on Brockwell Park dressed as their true authentic selves and adhering to a dress code of flamboyant, fabulous, topless or tight-fitting!
We’ve got to acknowledge that not everyone feels great all the time. Developing confidence and accepting yourself can take a while. This blog post explores the importance of acceptance and gives five practical tips to help LGBTQ+ individuals, and the rest of the alphabet, feel more confident during Pride Month.
Embrace Self-Acceptance: Acceptance starts with you. Accept yourself for who you are and celebrate your uniqueness. Remember that diversity is a beautiful aspect of the human experience, and your individuality contributes to the LGBT+ community’s richness.
Seek support: Surround yourself with supportive, inclusive individuals who uplift and empower you. Connect with local or national LGBT organisations, attend support groups, or engage with online communities of like-minded people (Twitter is a path to tread carefully on). Sharing experiences and having a sense of belonging can boost your confidence and help you navigate any challenges you may face.
Practice Self-Care: Prioritise self-care to nurture your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy (not spark – unless you want to come and fold my smalls and t-shirts like Marie Kwando), whether it’s reading, exercising, meditating, or spending time in nature. Taking care of yourself and learning to enjoy your own company will help you build resilience and feel more confident in your own skin.
Educate yourself: Knowledge is power. Educate yourself about the LGBT+ community’s history, struggles, and achievements. Understanding the progress can inspire confidence and empower you to contribute to the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance. Some of us can enjoy freedom today because of those who came before!
(Step on my soap box) We should not forget the black and brown activists who led the protests that led to Pride – whitewashed out of much of the LGBTQ+ rights movement history. It is those women: Storme’ DeLarverie, Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy who largely sparked the Stonewall riots – that gave us some progress towards equality. (Step off my soap box)
Express Yourself: Celebrate your unique self-expression. Whether it’s through fashion, art, music, or any other creative outlet, express yourself authentically. Embrace the freedom to be who you are, and let your individuality shine brightly. You may have done it at Hoopla, Birmingham Pride, or you may be planning to at Brighton or Manchester Pride (There are so many I thank gayprideshop.co.uk who have them listed here for you.
And dare I mention it, Madonna and Sam Smith’s song “Vulgar” beautifully encapsulates acceptance and self-expression. With its uplifting melody and lyrics, the song encourages us to embrace life’s challenges with courage and resilience. Just like the lyrics say, “Say we’re ridiculous, we’ll just go harder” … it reminds us that every day offers an opportunity to grow, learn, and become more confident in our true selves!
In addition to “Vulgar” here are four more songs that embody the theme of embracing another day to grow:
1. “Good Morning New Day” by Spiral Staircase
2. “Start Over” by Beyonce
3. “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone (Muse, PCDs, Buble)
4. “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman Soundtrack
So, as Pride Month unfolds, remember that acceptance and confidence are personal journeys that take time and effort. By embracing self-acceptance, seeking support, practising self-care, educating yourself, and expressing yourself authentically, you can build confidence and foster a deeper sense of acceptance.
Let’s celebrate our uniqueness, honour our journey, and stand together in solidarity. We must continue to strive for a more inclusive and accepting universe for all LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Lastly, it’s apt to note that age is never a barrier to living a purposeful life. Whether young or old, we all can make a positive impact, pursue our dreams, and find fulfilment in our lives. Embrace each new day as an opportunity for growth and embrace your true self with pure confidence, regardless of age or stage in life.
