Empowering Confidence and Belonging: Navigating the Workplace Landscape for LGBTQ+ Professionals

In a world where diversity and inclusion are celebrated, there’s an underlying struggle that many employees face, particularly in the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite the growing positive atmosphere in workplaces worldwide, a significant percentage of employees, 56% to be exact, remain hesitant to share crucial aspects of their identity while at work.

This reluctance stems from the fear that doing so might hinder their progress, as revealed in EY’s latest Belonging Barometer.

Shockingly, this number soars to 77% among LGBTQ+ workers who feel uncomfortable sharing their authentic selves within the professional realm.

“It’s a delicate balance between being true to yourself and fitting into the corporate mould. We must empower each other to find that equilibrium.”

It’s a paradoxical situation – 41% of workers regard their workplace as the primary source of belonging, second only to their homes.

Yet, an alarming 75% report experiencing exclusion in their work environment. This paradox is exacerbated by the evolving workplace landscape in the post-COVID-19 era. With shifting flexibility styles, heightened economic uncertainty, and ongoing workforce changes, a sense of belonging seems more elusive than ever.

So, how can we bridge this gap and create a workplace where everyone can thrive as their authentic selves?

One answer remains steadfast – the power of personal connection. EY’s study found that checking in on someone, both professionally and personally, continues to be a potent contributor to building a sense of belonging for 32% of workers.

This human touch is even more pronounced in the US, with 39% of employees valuing it. The importance of these one-on-one check-ins cannot be overstated.

Today’s work environment, though challenging, has also brought forth positive changes. Greater flexibility, born from hybrid work models and encouraged openness, has contributed to a sense of belonging.

Workers who experienced an impact on their belonging due to these factors appreciate the newfound flexibility and the freedom to express their opinions, needs, preferences, and personalities.

Furthermore, a striking 45% of respondents see flexible working arrangements and autonomy in choosing work hours and locations as their top motivators for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within their teams.

This underscores the imperative for leaders to integrate and offer flexible practices in the modern workplace.

Equity in pay is a crucial aspect of addressing workplace inequities, with 40% citing it as the top contributor to a sense of equity at work. Equitable performance evaluations (34%) and fair work assignments (30%) follow closely behind.

However, employees globally express reservations about career progression within their companies, with 66% perceiving barriers to advancement. Lack of resources, fair wages, and equal access to opportunities are the primary obstacles.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives continue to be integral in recruiting and attracting top talent.

An impressive 63% of worker respondents prefer companies that prioritise DE&I, with 74% stating that their company’s stance on DE&I influences their choice of workplace.

This sentiment is most pronounced among Gen Z and millennials, who prioritise DE&I in their job search, underscoring the importance of integrating DE&I into a company’s long-term growth strategy.

“Inclusion isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a commitment to creating spaces where all voices are heard, regardless of who you are or whom you love.” –

Jamie, LGBTQ+ Advocate

In today’s complex political and economic landscape, DE&I practise should be a fundamental expectation across all generations.

It’s a competitive advantage and a crucial factor for companies committed to sustainable growth. As we navigate the challenges of the modern workplace, let’s continue to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating an environment where everyone can truly be their authentic selves.
